A common question for anyone looking into our team is who we are and what we do. While you can answer some of that by visiting different pages on this site, this page is intended to address that more specifically.
Our team is composed of like-minded residents of Madison County who are interested in giving back to our community. We are also radio hobbyists/enthusiasts who share an interest in radio communication. Our affiliation with REACT International indicates that our primary focus is providing radio communication where it's needed, especially in emergency prep and response plus non-profit community events. We engage in training opportunities to help us better prepare for emergencies and disasters. But if that's all we focused on, we would be missing other excellent opportunities to help our Madison County neighbors.
We also seek out community service work that doesn't necessarily involve communication. Many charitable undertakings exist around the county and our goal is to help with those too. If we can augment and improve those activities by bringing a communication story to the table, we'll do it. But otherwise we're happy to just lend a hand.
Our team is currently small, less than 10 people, composed of some members who are licensed in both amateur radio and GMRS, and others who are GMRS-only. Our intention is to be a melting pot of individuals from different radio services coming together for a common goal, along with other interested community-minded residents who aren't necessarily "radio people." Some of our volunteer activities to date have been:
Meals on Wheels (monthly, no radio usage)
Food Bank (monthly, no radio usage)
Galaxy of Lights (annual, providing event safety radio communication)
Copper Top Farm Horse Show (semi-annual, providing event safety radio communication)
We are working on other volunteer opportunities like Panoply, and reaching out to similar amateur radio organizations such as Madison County ARES to propose and promote collaboration.
Due to the small size of our team and conflicting work/life schedules, we currently do not have a regular monthly meeting. Instead, we use Google Groups to share information within the team along with the Signal app for team texting. If we reach a point where regular meetings are practical, we will host online meetings for the convenience of all team members.
If this has not adequately answered your general questions about us, please let us know and we can provide more specific answers and also update this page to make it more useful for the next person. 😀
